SP650 Structure - 2026-27

In 2026-2027, group SP650 will feature an optional online problem-solving group.  This group will be assigned challenging problem sets of approximately 5 problems over the course of periods of 1.5-2.5 weeks. The level of difficulty will be similar to problems 6, 7 and Black Diamonds of group 650.  We will cover many IMO, IMO Shortlist problems as well as problems from National and Team Selection Tests around the world. Hints will be available as needed in cases where making partial progress is of instructive value.

Depending on the specific week, the group will meet on Zoom either on Sunday between 4 and 5:30 pm ET, or on Tuesday between 9 and 10:30 pm ET. The first discussion will be held on Sunday, September 20 at 4pm ET. An effort will be made to avoid conflicts with HMMT, PUMaC and other popular contests. During those meetings, students will present their work, with a Math-M-Addicts instructor highlighting key ideas and solutions not found by the students. Most of the meetings of the group will be moderated by Alex Perlin, but other teachers might participate depending on availability.  Students will have an opportunity to submit written solutions and receive feedback by email.

The group is open to all participants of group SP650 at no additional cost. Sporadic participation when students have additional time is acceptable.  For students joining remotely, there will be no online lectures. They will register for Group SP650 and be added to the SP650 Google Classroom for homework submission.

This group is recommended for students who would like to prepare better for USA(J)MO and MOP as well as all enthusiasts of hard and beautiful proof-based problems. The group will not be a good fit for students who cannot allocate 3+ hours/week over and above their regular commitment to group 650 homework.

This format is offered on an experimental basis. We will evaluate our experience at the end of the academic year to decide whether we want to continue with this group into the next academic year.
