Program Expectations
Part 1: Attending Class
Whether in person or online, please have a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes during class. While teachers may post notes for some classes, taking your own notes is extremely helpful for learning new concepts.
Attending In Person:
We are guests of Speyer School and expect our students to treat the premises with respect. We ask that:
There should be no running or riding scooters inside the school.
If you play chess during a break, please put the pieces back on the board.
Do not open student lockers or cabinets. Even if you are a Speyer student, on Saturday, you are attending MMA and must follow these rules.
Speyer is a nut-free facility. If you bring in any food, please make sure it does not contain nuts.
Parents are not allowed inside Speyer; please drop off your student(s) outside. You can pick them up from the same place. We have enough adults who will help as needed.
Attending Online:
Student cameras must be always on. If you have an issue on a particular day, inform your teacher via email or Zoom message. If your camera is off for most of the class without prior notice, it will be counted as an absence.
We strongly recommend not commuting, playing games, or working on other things during class. The material is challenging, and paying attention and participating in class is crucial for your MMA journey.
Students should use the chat feature respectfully, following their teachers’ guidance and not flooding the chat with unnecessary or personal comments.
We ask that parents not attend the lecture or help their students answer questions during the class.
I am an in-person student. Can I attend online class if I am unable to come in person?
Unfortunately, our classes are not interchangeable. Teachers organize small group activities during class, and class size limits apply to both in-person and online classes to ensure optimal learning.
I could not attend; can I watch a recorded session?
We are sorry, but we do not record our classes.
What do I do if I am absent?
If you are absent, review homework solutions and class notes if any. If you don’t understand something, please reach out to your teachers when you are next in class. You can also send your teachers private comments through Google Classroom. Remember - you are expected to submit homework even if you will be absent.
Part 2: Homework
Success at MMA depends on the student. Your placement letter mentioned the expected weekly time for homework. While we do not expect you to solve all the problems—most students don’t, especially as the material gets harder—we do expect you to put in the time thinking about and attempting as many problems as you can.
Most of your learning will happen when you do your homework. It is not optional; failing to submit homework is counted as an absence. Homework needs to be submitted even if you miss class. Most problems require more than an answer, you are expected to show your reasoning as well.
We require our students to do their homework without help from parents, tutors, or internet resources even if they struggle. Homework is the primary opportunity to build problem-solving skills. Our goal is the development of problem-solving habits, not just completing homework with correct answers. Dive in and enjoy the homework! If students get help, it would be best to focus on past homework and in-class notes to make sure that those have been internalized by students.
Best strategy for homework? Early in the week, read the problems. If you can solve something, do so. For the rest, pick 1-2 problems, sleep on them, and come back the next day. You can contact your teachers via private comments in Google Classroom when you have questions.
Part 3: Math-M-Addicts Attendance Policy
Students are expected to attend every class. Email us if you know you will miss a class.
Failure to submit homework or failure to keep your cameras on for a significant period for online classes will be counted as an absence, even if you are present in class. We expect homework to be submitted even if you miss class.
Students who miss more than four classes per semester will be asked to leave the program and forfeit tuition. Exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances such as family emergencies. You will receive a warning after two absences in a semester.
