Admissions Guidelines


 

Guidelines for existing students

All returning students are required to take a proficiency exam for admission and placement for the upcoming year. The general rule is:  Take the exam for the group that you attended in academic year 2022-23. If you attended group SP200, take the SP200 exam (not SP300). The two exceptions to this rule are: Students in SP250 should take the SP200 exam and students in SP650 should take the SP600 exam.

GUIDELINES

Current Group SP100 Students: 

  • You may take Group SP100 only once. 

  • Take the  SP100 Exam 

Current Group SP200 Students: 

  • You may take Group SP200 only once. 

  • Take the SP200 exam

Current Group SP300 Students: 

  • You must be in grades 8 or below to attend Group SP300.  You may take Group SP300 up to two times. 

  • All students currently in Group SP300, even if you are currently taking Group SP300 for the second time: SP300 exam.

  • You will be able to qualify for Group SP400 through this exam. 

Current Group SP400 Students: 

  • You must be in grades 9 or below to attend Group SP400.  You may take Group SP400 up to two times. 

  • All students currently in Group SP400, even if you are currently taking Group SP400 for the second time: SP400 exam.

  • You will be able to qualify for Group SP500 through this exam. 

Current Group SP500 Students: 

  • You must be in grades 11 or below to attend Group SP500.  You may take Group SP500 up to three times. 

  • All students currently in Group SP500, even if you are currently taking Group SP500 for the third time: SP500 exam.

  • You will be able to qualify for Group SP600 through this exam. 

Current Group SP600 and SP650 Students: 

  • You cannot take a lower-level class. 

  • Take the SP600 exam

GUIDELINE 2: Contest Prep and Former Students

Students who are currently not attending any morning classes, please follow the guidelines above based on your grade and the last morning class you attended.


Guidelines for new students

All students are required to take a proficiency exam for admission and placement for the upcoming year. 

GUIDELINES

Students entering Grade 12:

  • Take the SP500 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who are fluent in writing proofs and who have qualified for the USAJMO/USAMO or equivalent should sit for the SP600 exam.

Students entering grades 11:

  • Take the SP500 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who are fluent in writing proofs and who have qualified for the USAJMO/USAMO or equivalent should sit for the SP600 exam.

Students entering grades 10:

  • Take the SP400 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who are fluent in writing proofs and who have qualified for the USAJMO/USAMO or equivalent should sit for the SP500 exam.

Students entering grade 9:

  • Take the SP300 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who are fluent in writing proofs and who have qualified for the USAJMO/USAMO or equivalent should sit for the SP400 exam.

Students entering grade 8:

  • Take the SP200 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who qualified for the AIME and who are familiar with beginner proof methods including proof by contradiction and mathematical induction should take the SP300 exam.

Students entering grades 5, 6, and 7:

  • Take the SP100 exam.

  • Exceptions: Students who are fluent in Algebra and received a score above 20 on the 2023 AMC8 Exam may consider taking the SP200 exam.

Students entering grade 4 and below:

  • Students may take the SP100 Exam.  

  • Only students who pass into Group SP250 will be accepted into the program before 5th grade.
